Academic background: |
Inspiration for L2 instruction |
|
Learning a second language was one of my main goals when I came to the US, the other one is to have the opportunity to teach Spanish or help as Spanish interpreter. During my college years in the US, I did an internship as Spanish interpreter where I develop a new passion to help people to connect with their medical providers, passion that I continued to exercise as a volunteer at a low-cost clinic with a large influx of Hispanic patients.

Reflection:
I am a native Spanish speaker and this particular class helped me review knowledge learned long ago in school in Colombia. It also helped me learn parts of my own language that I didn't know. Linguistics helps us understand the social function of language apart from the fundamental structures and its correct use to create the conditions that make understanding the language and communication possible.
My academic training as a teacher in Colombia was contrasted with the practice of teaching here in the United States in the way of teaching a second language and enhancing the knowledge of one's native language.
For me, as a learner of linguistics in Spanish, my interest goes much further than a taxonomy of the language, the idea is to search for the essence of the language.
